Don’t Panic: CBD and Anxiety Relief

As coronavirus tears through the country, almost no one is untouched by its effects. If you aren’t worried about getting sick, you might be concerned about friends or relatives that are vulnerable, or just weathering the strains of social distancing and isolation.

As people around the world face the unprecedented uncertainty of a global pandemic, anxiety levels are spiking. New research from the American Psychiatric Association last week found that at least 48 percent of Americans are anxious about the possibility of getting sick, with more than one-third saying that coronavirus is having a “serious impact on their mental health.

As reported in Rolling Stone, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America says “capsized travel plans, indefinite isolation, panic over scarce resources and information overload” have also contributed to feelings of anxiety and isolation.

Unfortunately, many of the ways we usually burn off steam are off the table for now. Seeing friends, going to the gym, and family gatherings are all unavailable for many of us, at least at the moment. No wonder people are on edge. As all of us weather this storm, we are looking for ways to manage new levels of fear, stress, and uncertainty.

CBD to the rescue. Thankfully, medical marijuana dispensaries in Arizona have been classified as essential businesses. We couldn’t agree more.

CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol, interacts with the body’s own endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for regulating a wide range of functions, including sleep, memory, mood, and appetite. Researchers report than CBD can be incredibly useful in relieving conditions like anxiety and OCD by balancing out your own endocannabinoid system.

Basically CBD is the non-psychoactive sister of THC—which means it will calm you down without getting you high. Moreoever, enthusiasts swear by CBD’s multitude of benefits, apart from just anxiety relief. It has gained a notable following in the skin care industry and is popping up in everything from mascara to pain-relieving lotion. It is celebrated by everyone from pro-athletes to doctors, moms, and supermodels.

Although research is still in its early stages because of long-standing federal restrictions, more clinical studies using human participants are being conducted.

In a 2019 double-blind study—the gold standard for research—, 37 Japanese teens with social anxiety disorder were given a 300 mg dose of CBD oil or a placebo every day for four weeks. The group was monitored to assess their symptoms over four weeks, and researchers found that the patients who had received the CBD experienced reduced symptoms, comparable to Paroxetine, a drug commonly used to treat the condition.

Another study from 2019 looked at outpatients at a Colorado mental health clinic, who had expressed concerns about anxiety. In addition to treatment, the group was given 25 mg of CBD daily, over the course of three months. After about a month, 79.2 percent of patients reported an improvement in anxiety. After two months, 78.1 percent of patients reported an even greater reduction in anxiety.

If you are new to CBD, getting advice from a medical professional about dosing and consumption methods is a great place to start. Some cannabis dispensaries also have medical experts on hand that can provide you with sound advice and dosage recommendations. Even better – you can take advantage of Leafly online ordering to maintain social distance and stay safe while tending to your anxiety.
